Below, we’ve covered a range of topics, including tipping, payment options, minimum service hours, and tips for packing personal items. You’ll also find guidance on handling valuables and making sure pets and plants stay safe and comfortable during the move.
When is the Best Time to Move?

Anytime is a great time to move with Optimum Van Lines! We’re here to help, no matter the season. Our team is available year-round to handle your move with the utmost care. Our busiest season is typically May through October, so if you’re looking to save on rates, consider scheduling during off-peak months.

When Should I Contact a Moving Company?

The earlier, the better! We recommend reaching out to us four to six weeks before your move date. The more notice you provide, the more likely we can accommodate your preferred schedule.

How Long Does a Move Typically Take?

For local moves, timing depends on the number of items and the distance between locations. Long-distance moves can vary based on factors like the season, weather, shipment size, and the time required for loading and unloading. Distance and route also play a role in how long it takes.

What if My Move Date Changes?

If your move date changes, contact your Optimum Van Lines move coordinator as soon as possible. They’ll work with you to adjust your plan and ensure everything stays on track.

How Do I Choose Moving Companies for a Free Estimate?

Start by deciding if you need a full-service moving company. Research local, national, and long-distance options, and ask for recommendations from friends or family. Look up companies on the Better Business Bureau to check for licensing and insurance. For local moves in Texas, companies should have TXDOT licensing, and for interstate moves, they need USDOT authorization. With Optimum Van Lines, you can rest assured we meet all the requirements for a reliable and safe move.

Is There a Minimum Time Requirement for Moving Services?

For local moves, Optimum Van Lines has a three-hour minimum unless stated otherwise on your contract. Even if your move takes less than three hours, you’ll be billed for the minimum time. If your move extends beyond this, we prorate additional time in 15-minute increments. For long-distance moves, there’s a minimum cubic footage requirement.

How Will the Movers Know What to Take and What to Leave?

Our movers will do an initial walkthrough to confirm which items to load and which to leave behind.

What if I’m Not Fully Packed by Moving Day?

If it’s clear you won’t be fully packed by moving day, notify your move coordinator as soon as possible. We can discuss options, which may include rescheduling or completing your packing on the day, though additional time and costs may apply.

Can Movers Arrange Furniture in My New Home?

Yes, our team will place furniture and boxes in designated rooms and arrange items to your preference. We also offer a furniture receiving and delivery service for new furniture that needs temporary storage.

Can I Ride in the Moving Truck?

Due to liability, customers cannot ride in the moving truck.

What Payment Methods Are Accepted for Moving Services?

For interstate moves, moving charges must be settled before unloading at your new location. You can pay with cash or postal money order, and we can arrange other options, like credit card payments, ahead of time. A deposit is usually required when booking. Beware of companies asking for large deposits up front, as they’re often brokers.

Can I Pack Items in My Dresser Drawers?

Generally, it’s fine to leave clothes in dresser drawers. Just make sure to remove any loose items that could roll around. For larger furniture pieces, like triple dressers or large armoires, we recommend emptying them partially.

Will the Movers Load All My Packed Boxes?

Yes, as long as the driver determines the boxes are safe for transport.

How Should I Prepare My Home for Moving Day?

Clear pathways inside and outside your home to ensure safe movement. Consider removing doors from hinges if you know certain items are a tight fit. It’s also thoughtful to have water or refreshments available, especially on warm days.

What Should I Do with Jewelry and Valuables?

It’s best to carry valuable or irreplaceable items with you, or arrange for their separate transport.

Are There Items You Can’t Move?

Optimum Van Lines, like all licensed movers, cannot transport hazardous materials such as propane, firearms, paint, and aerosols.

Can Movers Dispose of Trash on Moving Day?
We don’t provide trash disposal services, but we can remove items to a designated disposal site for a debris removal fee.
What Should I Expect When a Relocation Specialist Visits My Home?

The relocation specialist will assess your items to calculate volume, packing costs, and other charges. Be prepared for a thorough inspection of closets, cabinets, and other storage areas to ensure an accurate estimate.

How Do I Prepare Appliances for Moving?

Disconnect appliances like washers, dryers, and refrigerators in advance. We can handle this service for an additional fee—just let your representative know.

How Can I Make Sure My Belongings Go to the Right Room?

Using a simple labeling system is key. Clearly mark each box on the top and three sides with the room name or a color-coded label to indicate its destination. At your new place, our team will work closely with you to make sure every box and item ends up in the right room.
